Effect of fartlek and plyometric training on speed, speed endurance and explosive strength among male rugby players: A comparative study

Abstract

Background: Rugby is a high-intensity collision sport demanding exceptional physical fitness characterized by speed, explosive power, and endurance. Fartlek training and plyometric training have emerged as prominent conditioning methodologies; however, comparative evidence regarding their relative effectiveness for developing physical parameters in rugby players remains limited. Objective: This study aimed to compare the effects of twelve-week fartlek training and plyometric training interventions on speed, speed endurance, and explosive strength among male rugby players. Methods: Ninety beginner male rugby players (aged 19-25 years) from Panjab University affiliated colleges were randomly allocated into three groups: Fartlek Training Group (n=30), Plyometric Training Group (n=30), and Control Group (n=30). The experimental groups underwent training three sessions per week for twelve weeks. Physical parameters were assessed using standardized tests: 50-meter dash for speed, 150-meter run for speed endurance, and vertical jump test for explosive strength. Data were analyzed using paired t-test for within-group comparisons and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) for between-group comparisons at p<0.05 significance level. Results: Both experimental groups demonstrated significant improvements compared to the control group (p<0.001). The plyometric training group exhibited superior improvements in speed (7.39% vs 5.77%) and explosive strength (15.86% vs 7.36%) compared to the fartlek training group. Conversely, the fartlek training group demonstrated greater improvement in speed endurance (7.92% vs 5.66%). ANCOVA revealed significant between-group differences for speed (F=18.74), speed endurance (F=24.86), and explosive strength (F=38.52). Post-hoc analysis confirmed significant differences between all paired comparisons. Conclusion: Both training modalities effectively improve physical fitness parameters in rugby players, with training-specific effects observed. Plyometric training is more effective for developing speed and explosive strength through stretch-shortening cycle mechanisms, while fartlek training demonstrates superior efficacy for enhancing speed endurance through integrated aerobic-anaerobic conditioning. An integrated periodized approach incorporating both training methods is recommended for comprehensive physical development of rugby players.
